Based on the popular EA video Game, Need for Speed is another attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Fast and Furious franchise. Unfortunately, this film releases a few months after the speed related death of Paul Walker. It is hard not to watch this movie without pointing out all the irresponsible stunts made in the film. For example, there are scenes with the characters driving while talking on their cell phones. However, the most blatant examples of recklessness occur when street racer driver, Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) attempts to scare his fellow passenger Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) by driving head on into oncoming traffic, speeding through parking lots full of pedestrians and evading the police by jumping his car over a highway divide. However, Need for Speed is no different from the Fast and the Furious films in terms of driving stunts so I highly anticipate this factor will not keep viewers away.
The leader of a motley crew of mechanics, Tobey runs his father’s auto shop and has fallen behind on the mortgage payments. When his old rival, Dino, returns to town, Tobey begrudgingly takes a job rebuilding an old Mustang for Dino with a promise of a portion of the sales. However, once the car is sold, Dino challenges Tobey to a race with the winner taking the entire amount of the car sale. It is during this race that one of Tobey’s friends is killed and Tobey is framed for the death by Dino. Cut to two years later, when Tobey, released from jail, hatches his plan for revenge against Dino.

You get a wide range of characters in the film, who are eerily similar to The Fast and Furious cast. Tobey Marshall, basically a reincarnation of Dominic Toretto, is a man who lives by a strict code.  I think this movie was an interesting choice for Aaron Paul to be one of his first films after the end of Breaking Bad.  He does not carry the same swagger as Vin Diesel or even have the good-looking charm of Paul Walker. And, because of popularity of the racing genre, there will be many comparisons to the characters of the Fast and Furious franchise. Tobey Marshall is a quiet man who only speaks when he has something to say and usually it is supposed to be profound. I do not know if was the last season of Breaking Bad but the bad-ass element that Paul has garnered does not follow him into this film. I found his portrayal of Tobey to be a similar but diluted version of Jesse Pinkman. However, Marshall is carried by the actions of his crew and the plucky charm of Imogen Poots, the newest member of the crew.

Imogen Poots is beginning to prove herself as a versatile actress with her brilliant comedic timing. Hopefully, this movie will help ensure she will not be sucked into rom-com hell. As Julia Maddon, she portrays a sexy high-end car broker with a persona that allows her to mesh believably well in the gritty world of street racing. I liked the chemistry that Julia had with Tobey, and once the movie veers into road trip mode, she helps to carry this portion of the film drawing out conversation from the tight lipped Tobey.  His best friend/sidekick, Benny (Scott Mescudi) is a wise-cracking pilot who helps the crew avoid traffic and police while street racing. Rami Malek and Ramon Rodriguez round out the remaining members of the crew.
The most entertaining performance came from Michael Keaton, who plays Monarch, the mysterious creator of the Deleon race, the Holy Grail for all street racers. Keaton’s performance reminded me of the manic performance he gave in Multiplicity, which I found to be quite funny. Monarch acts as an oracle-type character giving the audience background on Tobey’s racing history as well as the rivalry between Tobey and Dino.  I do not think that Dominic Cooper was a great movie villain. Sure, Dino Brewster is a bad guy and all-round dick but he does not really challenge the protagonists with any type of diabolical plans. He is just a greedy, sore loser who makes some really bad choices.

Overall the action of Need for Speed is on-par with every other racing movie out there. I think audiences will enjoy the comedy of the film from the collective performances of the actors. It will be interesting to see if this film can fight off 300: Rise an Empire which releases the weekend before this film and Veronica Mars which releases the same day.
