Everybody Leaves centers on nine-year-old Nieve Guerra, a bright girl with a keen sense of observation. Nieve’s mother, fed up of the daily abuse of her alcoholic theater director husband, runs off with a Swedish radio producer and takes Nieve away to live in Cienfuegos, on the southern coast of Cuba. When Nieve’s mother gets dismissed from hosting her radio program for playing music by an artist who is ideologically “incorrect”, it opens a window for Nieve’s father to return and demand permanent custody of the sensitive young child.
